Figure 4

This fourth issue from the first series of Captain Confederacy sees Jeremy “Captain Confederacy” Gray, the nationalist hero of a national TV show turned fugitive of the Confederate States of America, arrive at the safe house of the resistance. He is introduced to members including his former castmate turned rebel the Black Kate; Kitsune Lee, a Japanese woman who is a part of Japan’s national heroes, and “M’sieu Hex,” who is described to the reader by Jeremy as he is known to the authorities: “Mr. X? Goddamn nigger -Louisiana troublemaker” (see fig. 2, Shetterly and Stone 13). These characters can be seen in color on the issue’s cover -- non-white characters smiling down at Jeremy in his nationalist Confederacy costume, a scene not in the comic (see fig. 1). The rebels go on to convince Jeremy to be the face of their rebellion. Jeremy accepts his assignment, ready to overthrow the nation that made racial others second-class citizens and himself a hero.
